Great Wedding Photography

Great wedding photography depends on more than just great photographic equipment. The skills of a professional photographer are developed over years of experience and are reflected in the quality one can expect. The ability to use lighting, both natural and engineered, to create flattering images of a bridal party is a skill not to be underestimated. The result of glaring strong light shining directly into the subjects eyes, causing them to squint, can be the ruin of an otherwise great picture. By setting up a shot keeping the bright light source behind the subject, a technique known as contre jour, not only solves the issue of glare but also produces a beautiful contour of light around the subject, distinguishing them from the background and creating a more three dimensional effect. By adding some additional front lighting, either using flash or positioning a white reflector, relieves the shadow and brightens faces and eyes.
Care must be exercised when using this technique as excessive back light can degrade the image quality by ghosting on the photograph and causing lack of contrast.
